Rethinking the relationship between wind, energy and yacht design

Innovation has always been an integral part of Aldo Cichero’s approach to design: not as an end in itself, but as a way to rethink performance, efficiency, functionality and the relationship between a vessel and its environment.

His research into sailing systems has led to the development of patented solutions that transform the sail from a conventional propulsion element into an integrated component of the yacht’s architecture, energy strategy and onboard experience.

Tilting Wingsails

Aldo Cichero developed and patented an innovative rigid wingsail system designed to combine aerodynamic efficiency with unprecedented architectural flexibility.

The wing-shaped sails can be oriented according to wind conditions and tilted or lowered when required.

Once lowered, they can become part of the yacht’s architecture, creating protection and additional sheltered space over the deck or flybridge.

This integration between propulsion and architecture allows a technical element to perform multiple functions while contributing to reduced fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

Architectural Configuration | When lowered, the wingsail becomes an architectural element, creating a protected and spacious outdoor living area.

Photovoltaic Integration | The wingsail can integrate photovoltaic surfaces, combining wind propulsion with onboard renewable-energy generation.

Telescopic Wingsails

A second patented concept explores the possibility of varying the dimensions and configuration of rigid sails through a telescopic system.

The objective is to adapt the sail area to different navigation and weather conditions while reducing its physical impact when full sail power is not required.

The system combines aerodynamic research, mechanical innovation and yacht design within a single integrated concept.

Innovation as part of design

For Aldo Cichero, technology becomes most valuable when it disappears into the design itself.

The patented sailing systems reflect this principle: wind propulsion, energy efficiency, architecture and onboard living are conceived together rather than as separate systems.

The result is a different way of thinking about sailing — one in which innovation serves both the vessel and the sea.
